THE INSPIRATION

It was the very first piece Yves Saint Laurent presented under his name, in 1962. Opening his fashion show, worn with white shantung pants and mules, the thick wool double-breasted overcoat worn by sailors to ward off the cold and the rain -- the caban, or pea coat – was reinvented as a couture garment. And paved the way for Yves Saint Laurent’s signature style, which borrowed from menswear to make women feel comfortable and confident.
